CASE STUDY
Client: Skills Development Scotland
Scenario-Based Hydrogen Skills Analysis

As Scotland works towards its ambition of producing 25GW of hydrogen by 2045, understanding future workforce requirements is critical. Skills Development Scotland commissioned GC Insight, on behalf of the Scottish Hydrogen Skills Group, to assess the jobs, skills and training needed to support the growth of Scotland's hydrogen economy.

Our Role:

GC Insight:

  • Analysed the workforce requirements of small and large-scale hydrogen production projects across the full project lifecycle.
  • Developed a hydrogen skills taxonomy to provide a consistent framework for future workforce planning.
  • Consulted with hydrogen developers, supply chain businesses and industry stakeholders to understand current and future skills needs.
  • Developed scenario-based workforce estimates to model future skills demand for the hydrogen sector
  • Mapped Scotland's hydrogen-related education, training and apprenticeship provision.
  • Identified opportunities, challenges and practical actions to support the development of a skilled hydrogen workforce.

Outcome:

The study provides a robust evidence base to support future skills planning for Scotland's hydrogen economy. It demonstrates that many hydrogen roles can be supported through transferable skills from sectors such as oil and gas, renewables and manufacturing, while highlighting the need for targeted upskilling, industry collaboration and long-term workforce planning to support sector growth.
